Large crowds at the open day at the Rohrdorf cement plant in Gmunden

Gmunden, June 9, 2024 – Around 1,000 visitors took advantage of the open day at Rohrdorfer in Gmunden yesterday. In bright sunshine, the guests were welcomed with a varied program and an insight into the future of the cement industry.

The highlights of the day were the plant tours, where visitors were able to take a look behind the scenes and learn more about the production of Rohrdorfer cement. Culinary delights were also served in the marquee for a symbolic euro per meal and drink. The proceeds from the marquee were donated to a charitable cause. The youngest guests in particular had fun searching for gemstones in the large pile of sand, while the adults were able to find out about the first CO2 recovery plant in the cement industry.

Guests of honor from state and regional politics

Among the guests were the mayors and deputy mayors of the surrounding communities as well as Deputy Governor Dr. Manfred Haimbuchner and Member of Parliament and Mayor Rudolf Raffelsberger. During a subsequent guided tour, the guests of honor were given an exclusive insight into the plant in Gmunden. The management of the Rohrdorfer Group and Rohrdorfer Zement GmbH were available for questions and discussions.

The first CO2 recovery plant in the cement industry

A particular highlight was the presentation of the first CO2 recovery plant in the Austrian cement industry. The plant, which will make a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions, is an important step towards sustainability and environmental protection. It will capture and recycle up to 30,000 tons of CO2 annually, which corresponds to a significant improvement in the ecological footprint. The captured CO2 will be used in the production of formic acid and other chemicals in industrial demand.

This innovative project was developed in collaboration with the University of Leoben and was supported by funding from the Climate and Energy Fund. The CO2 recovery plant is a central component of the comprehensive strategy to increase energy efficiency and minimize environmental impact. With its commissioning, which is planned for 2026, the Gmunden cement plant is setting new standards in the Austrian cement industry and underlining the compatibility of economic success and environmental protection.
