Delegation from KEI visits Rohrdorf cement plant

Rohrdorf, June 18, 2024 – Bianca Dornisch-Bund and Linda Gümbel, consultants from the glass, cement and lime industries from the Competence Centre on Climate Change Mitigation in Energy-Intensive Industries (Kompetenzzentrum Klimaschutz in energieintensiven Industrien, KEI), visited the Rohrdorf cement plant. The Net Zero Emission team presented the latest developments and progress in the field of decarbonization to the guests. The focus was on the status quo of the C3Pi project. The pilot project for the process-integrated production of tempered clays as the main decarbonized cement component at the Rohrdorf cement plant has been funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection and the European Union since October 2023. In addition to C3Pi, other ongoing projects were presented that are tackling the challenge of decarbonization. These include the investigation of alternative firing technologies that play a key role in low-emission cement production, such as the integration of plasma burner technology for electrification and biomass gasification technology.

Furthermore, an overview was given of current and future funding programs that support projects in the area of decarbonization of the cement industry. These programs are crucial to drive research and development in this sector and promote innovative solutions to help Rohrdorfer achieve its goal of CO2 -neutral production by 2038.
